I do what I call a modified keto right eating lifestyle, because I do less fat than a keto diet.

I do an ultralow carb right eating lifestyle, and eat fewer carbs than most people doing a keto diet. I eat to my meter. I eat no more than 5-8 carbs per meal and often 10 or less per day @A DiabetesTeam Member.

I have been doing my diabetes journey without diabetic medications since being diagnosed diabetic February 2021. My A1C was 13.5 and my doctor wanted me on long acting insulin, quick acting insulin, and metformin. I told my new pcp that I suspect I have been diabetic for at least the previous 12 years, since that is when I started drinking 150-250 ounces of water daily.

I negotiated a 3 month reprieve from medications, dependent on bringing my A1C down to 6.1. I met that goal and am still diabetic medications free in my diabetic journey. At 3.5 months my A1C was 4.9. My doctor was amazed and asked what did I do.

I told her I test a minimum of 4-6 times a day and eating to my meter. I told her about eating 8 or less carbs per day. I told her about plating all my food before eating on a 7 inch plate. I walk 10-15 minutes immediately after eating each meal. I explained about eating to live and not living to eat.

My insurance would only cover 50 test strips a month. I purchased a test kit with meter, 50 lancets, lancet pen, 50 test strips, and carry case for $100.00 copay with insurance.

I quickly realized that testing one day for morning fasting blood glucose number, and the next for 2 hour number was close to useless. I needed more data points. The test strips cost about $1.00 each, so I asked diabetes supply what meters test strips were low cost. I also polled diabetics I know for recommendations.

I purchased a new Auvon blood glucose test kit system for less than $30.00 from Amazon with 100 test strips, 100 lancets, lancet pen, meter and carry bag.

I did 2500 blood glucose tests, data points, in the first year. I know how each food affects my blood glucose numbers. I know what foods I can eat somewhat freely, what foods I must limit, and what foods I must almost totally avoid.

I purchased a 2nd test kit with 150 test strips, 50 lancets, lancet pen, meter, and carry bag. As well as 300 more test strips and an automatic monthly order of 150 test strips.

Baby steps.

And never give up, never surrender, never ever.
You got this.
Have a wonderful day.

I use a modified keto as I eat low carb but not strict and I will modify recipes to make them lower in fat. I currently am not on meds. There are certain foods I do not eat such as pasta, rice, potatoes, sugar, refined or processed foods, high sugar fruits, chips and crackers unless they are quest protein chips or cheese crackers or Hilo chips or cheese puffs.
