That fruity or nail polish-like smell is a warning sign of a serious condition called diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). It happens when blood sugar levels get dangerously high and the body can't use glucose for energy properly.

Here's what's going on inside the body:

- Without enough insulin, cells can't absorb glucose from the blood
- The body starts breaking down fat for energy instead
- This fat breakdown releases chemicals called ketones
- Ketones build up in the blood and make it acidic
- The body tries to get rid of ketones through breathing and sweat, creating that distinctive fruity smell DKA is a medical emergency. Other warning signs to watch for include:

- Stomach pain, nausea, or vomiting
- Shortness of breath
- Extreme thirst
- Frequent urination
- Tiredness or weakness

If you or someone around you notices a fruity or nail polish smell along with any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately. Treatment involves insulin and fluids to bring blood sugar back under control.

@A DiabetesTeam Member, thank you for bringing this out. I remember HS classmates having that type of fruity smell and they were fat but they love playing basketball so I never thought it was connected to blood sugar. One of them died while we were still in college, believe he was already diabetic when we were HS but we didn’t know. The others I have not seen in reunions the past decades. All the while I thought the smell was connected to deodorants or colognes they were using that was interacting with their sweat. Thanks for the information.

Yes, it is definitely serious. It happens more commonly in Type 1s, but it can affect any diabetic with uncontrolled blood sugars.
Thank you for your response 💖

Yes! I've been hospitalized twice for this. Very scary and very serious!
