Welcome to all the newly diagnosed members! A fasting blood glucose (also called fasting blood sugar) test measures the amount of sugar (glucose) in your blood after you haven't eaten or drunk anything — except water — for 8 to 12 hours. It's usually done in the morning before breakfast.
This gives doctors a clear picture of how your body manages sugar on its own, without the influence of a recent meal. Here's a simple breakdown of what the numbers mean:
- 70–99 mg/dL — Normal range
- 100–125 mg/dL — Impaired fasting glucose (sometimes called prediabetes)
- 126 mg/dL or higher — Typically indicates diabetes
These numbers help your doctor understand how well your body is handling blood sugar and whether your treatment plan is working. It's worth knowing that some people with diabetes notice their fasting blood sugar is actually higher in the morning than after eating. This is called the dawn phenomenon — overnight hormones signal the liver to release stored glucose, raising blood sugar levels.
If this happens regularly, it's a great thing to bring up with your doctor!

I am always in Ketosis.
I eat less than 5 net carbs a day.
But that is how I control my numbers.
My numbers are way too low for me to ever be in ketoacidosis.
I got this.
I'm cutting my Jardiance in half tomorrow. Will start to titrate down my Jardiance dose slowly to keep good nondiabetic numbers.
