While Type 1 diabetes typically starts in childhood and Type 2 diabetes usually develops in adults over 45, there are other forms of diabetes that can develop. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the body attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. When more than 80% of these cells are destroyed, blood sugar becomes difficult to control and symptoms appear. Some adults can develop autoimmune diabetes later in life. This condition can be complex to manage since it shares characteristics of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Like Type 1, it involves the immune system attacking pancreatic cells, but it may progress more slowly. Treatment typically requires insulin therapy, similar to Type 1 diabetes, along with careful monitoring of blood glucose levels.
