Sorry should have added since you were the "right age" when diagnosed to be one that was "misdiagnosed"

If you believe that you may in fact have LADA, it's a very simple blood test called a GAD or GADA (Glutamic Acid Decarboxylase Antibody test - Ya, GADA) ๐Ÿ˜

And a positive test = LADA and not Type 2
A negative GADA test = really pesky, atypical Type 2

There is a couple forms of "Monogenic" (hereditary) Diabetes but they are "always" diagnosed either in New Born Babies (NDM or Neonatal Diabetes Mellitus) or MODY - Mature Onset Diabetes in the Young - caused by 1 of about a dozen possible "messed up genes" that you get from one of your parents - onset is in children under 10

Then there is an Adult form of Type 1 called LADA or Latent Auto-immune Diabetes in Adults

It was previously called Type 1.5 when they weren't sure what it was - initially it presents as Type 2 but then starts to look like Type 1 after "months or years"

(Type 1 sets in, in "weeks" - you don't "progress" to Type 1, it's diagnosed by an antibody test)

In the case of LADA a test will show "one" antibody, and for a Type 1 diagnosis it will be 2 or 3 different antibodies

So LADA is kinda like a lighter version of Type 1, but the LADA patient WILL BE eventually Insulin Dependent like a Type 1

Typical Onset for LADA is in your 20's/30's and over 90% of the time it's "misdiagnosed" as Type 2 because they both look the same at onset. If you have Type 2 and suddenly it seems to advance practically overnight, that's a "queue" that the Doc should run an antibody test to see if it is LADA - but it is treated "exactly" the same as Type 2 until you need insulin

The advantage to knowing is you will get on Insulin at the first signs of progression otherwise the Doc could "unsuccessfully" continue to treat Type 2 which could cause a lot vascular damage before they catch the misdiagnosis

There is also a Type 3C - that is the result of any damage to the pancreas that causes an insulin production problem. So anything from an accident or some kind of trauma, pancreatitis could cause damage, COVID can damage the pancreas (and a few other infections) or certain drugs - so an environmental cause that's not metabolic or autoimmune

Secondary Diabetes: This type develops as a result of other health conditions or from taking certain medications. The treatment approach depends on what's causing the high blood glucose levels.

Both of these types are less common than Type 1, Type 2, or Gestational diabetes, which is why they're discussed less frequently.
