It is an acronym for Mature Onset Diabetes in the Young

It is an "inherited" form of "monogenic" diabetes caused by a "single gene mutation"

The child, when growing as an embryo inherits one of 5 (messed up) genes from one of the parents resulting in diabetes similar to Type 2 with 5 possible different degrees of severity depending on the exact mutated gene

The diagnosis is confirmed by a Genetic Test that identifies the (bad) Gene

About 5% of "all diabetics" have the MODY (type)

Of the 5 (sub-types ?)

One type will almost never need meds, can manage totally with diet
One type will likely need meds but not insulin
One type will certainly need meds and maybe insulin
One type will need insulin eventually
One type will probably need insulin at diagnosis and forever thereafter

This type leaves nothing to prevent - if you inherit the bad gene from one of your parents that's all it takes - nothing you can do about that
