Sleep And Diabetes
A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭

It seems that I have insomnia at night lately. Is this a common problem with diabetes or could it be from consuming Zevia cola that has the natural sweetener of the Stevia plant but also has caffeine? Are sleep supplements safe for diabetics? I took a melatonin supplement last night and feel fatigued and groggy this morning. My fbs was 114 and wondering if melatonin can raise blood sugar? I take metformin and 2.5 mg of glipizide once a day.

Go and see your doctor is the best answer. Are you sure you are not worrying or a bit depressed. I was having sleep problems I could get to sleep no problem but would then wake at 3 or 4 am and not get back. I went to a sleep clinic and discovered I had sleep apnea. So I would advise get medical help.

My insomnia seems to run in cycles. I have several nights i sleep good and then several nights i play musical beds between my bed, the recliner, and finally the couch. On those nights/days i am not as rested. I would skip the caffeine after 6 and get a little more exercise in the fresh air. @A DiabetesTeam Member makes a good point about getting checked out by a doctor. Hope you find some relief.

Graham I forget to add with help for better sleep. Firstly have no drinks after 8pm . Go to bed at the same time every night and avoid all social media. I find reading is very relaxing and when I switch of for the night I listen to an ebook and I’m asleep fairly quickly. Id take the melatonin tablets but they are like benzos if you stop taking them you will have sleep problems.

Like Dosie I have cycles of insomnia. I use a combination tincture of valerian, hops, and lavender. I take 1/2 t to a teaspoon and that usually does the trick. If I can’t turn my brain off and have a million thoughts swirling around I take a blend that has skullcap too. Some nights it’s a hopeless cause and sleep eludes me. Can’t say it’s because of diabetes as it’s been an issue for a while. I try to put electronics away at least an hour before bed and do some reading and that helps.
