Trouble Sleeping
A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 3 years ago, and have been struggling with insomnia for a while now. It is a struggle to exercise when I’m feeling so tired and worn out all I want to do is sit down! I’ve tried using melatonin with no affect. Does anyone have any suggestions I would greatly appreciate feedback thanks

If the melatonin didn't do anything for you then your sleep issues are probably not the standard slightly messed up hormones from the thyroid issues that cause the majority of sleep issues in Type 2's.

So if you have tried the other tricks - don't eat after 8pm, don't drink any stimulants later in the day (coffee/tea), try to relax in the evening etc etc then it may be time, if the trouble sleeping is (chronic) to talk to your Doc about it.

There is some "bigger gun" medications that could be of value. And while most cringe at the thought of adding "another pill", lack of quality sleep messes with your blood sugar plus causes no end of other problems including increasing your risk of heart attack and stroke - the number 1 and 2 killers of Type 2's in the first place simply from being Type 2 even 'without' a sleep disorder jacking up the odds.
