My fasting B/S was 112 this morning. I ate two small pieces of thin crust pizza for dinner and 2/3 ‘s of a cup of rebel ice cream . Three hours after dinner my B/S was 131. Is this an acceptable range? I only eat pizza once a week always thin crust, small pieces and maximum of two slices. Should I give this up or only eat one piece. I did 13,000 steps also.
Also, can you take milk thistle with metformin?
Well isn't pizza Mediterranean "food" anyhow - invented in Italy 🤣
@A DiabetesTeam Member I missed that last question you put up about taking Milk Thistle with Metformin.
I would be careful - certainly make sure it wasn't leaving you low.
While they have a different method of action, you wouldn't want both of them "working well" and leaving you with overnight lows.
The Metformin works to reduce how much sugar the liver releases while the Milk Thistle kinda cleanses the liver of toxins (probably flushing some of it's stored sugar in the process).
I had a look for studies and currently there is a Phase 4 study looking at 200-some users of both metformin and milk thistle but not even any interim results. I'm thinking it was like a 2017 or 18 study that I read (on detoxing acetaminophen from the liver) that identified it's fasting blood sugar benefits (as a side effect), so my own use of Milk Thistle was based on that study and not any specific studies when used with Type 2 patients.
131 is an "awesome" Pizza eating number.
A non-diabetic could expect to see up to 140 (max) after eating and that would be consider totally normal.
For diagnostic reasons we test at 2 hours. But the digestive process (for most of us) is about a 4 hour total thing.
From first bite to about hour 1 or blood sugar will reach it's highest level - if you check once in a while (at 1 hour) or wear a CGM the number can be almost "alarming" - way beyond what you would even think of as "high".
That's normal, even in a non-diabetic.
By hour 2 that's when our system should have (reacted) to that sugar spike and "dealt with it".
If at hour 2 we are over 140 (7.8) that is what separates us from the "sugar eaters" - if we didn't have some deficiency our bodies would never let us run higher than that 7.8/140 for longer than that hour or so period when we are actively digesting.
Then by hour 3 we should "mostly" be back to our pre-meal number and by hour 4 we should absolutely be all the way back and (ready) to eat again without worrying about still riding "some of the wave" from whatever we last ate.
That is important because if we "sneak a snack" about 2 hours before a meal, we will "starting" that meal with our numbers "jacked from the snack" which can really mess with your after meal number.
If I blow myself up - for me that is over 8.0/144 at my two hour reading then I will usually test again at hour 3 to see if I have recovered to back down sub 130's/6's and I'm fine with that.
That tells me, yes, I was "in the danger zone" but probably not for more than an hour duration.
Sorry, I do get off on tangents. If you want to eat that pizza more regularly I personally would test (that portion size) at 2 hours just to see where you are, but given your 3 hour number is "excellent", even if you are a little high earlier it may be "acceptable" is you are only going to eat that once every other week or so.
I do eat pizza about once a month - we need to try and not deprive ourselves of "everything". I wish I could wolf down half of it but know I need to stop at 2 pieces (which is really pushing my limit) but then I will eat another 2 pieces 4 hours later.
I appreciate the "treat" and have figured a way to keep it in the (rotation) of what I eat.
On my modified Mediterranean diet, I will have two small pieces of thin crust pizza once a week and maybe two tacos occasionally. Both don’t seem to spike my BS readings as I use very small portions of each and stay within a total of 100 or fewer carbs a day and exercising at least 7,000 to 12,000 steps a day.
@A DiabetesTeam Member if you take the US number and divide by 18 you get the numbers you are familiar with. An example is my fasting number today was (Phone number can only be seen by the question and answer creators).
