Members shared their experiences with the original poster's question about whether weight loss decreases neuropathy, with the overwhelming consensus being that losing weight does not reduce existing nerve pain or damage, though several members noted it can help with overall health factors like blood pressure and cholesterol. Many community members described losing significant amounts of weight, ranging from 45 to over 100 pounds, yet still experiencing numbness, tingling, and burning pain in their hands and feet, with some finding relief through medications like gabapentin while others reported side effects from nerve pain treatments. A recurring theme was that neuropathy is caused by nerve damage from diabetes itself, particularly poor blood sugar control over time, and once nerves are damaged they are very difficult to repair regardless of weight, leading members to encourage the poster to focus on blood sugar management and working with their doctor to find effective pain relief rather than expecting weight loss alone to solve the problem.

I suspect it's a myth. I don't have a weight problem, yet peripheral neuropathy crippled my foot. It's the nerves that are the problem. They don't put on or lose weight!

weight loss does help when you factor in other issues such as blood pressure, cholesterol level, heart issues.

Can they try another medication? I don't have an answer to your question, but I would think that once the nerves have been damaged it would be very hard for them recover.
