My sugar levels are always in the 2 hundreds when I wake up but when I take my meds during the day my numbers go down. I am on metformin and glipizide. The doctor told me to have some protein before I go to bed if I am hungry like a protein bar or protein shake or yogurt (plain). My question is, does anyone know of a good protein bar I can buy that's good for us diabetics? I was reading up on it and I saw that the Kashi bars might not be so bad.

I snack on unsweetened mixed nuts 1/2 cup and water 2 hrs before bed.
Yogurt and protein bars have sugar too. Also, I listen to my stomach and if it's not growling I don't eat just drink water and walk especially before bed and I get the best sleep. If I'm having dinner after 6pm I won't eat a snack but I walk after each meal, dancing, throwing the ball with the children and just having fun with my life. I eat lean meats 1 ounce, 1/2 veggies, 1/3 brown rice, a small apple or orange, 1 slice whole wheat bread and 1/2 lowfat milk. Breakfast : 1/2 cup oatmeal or 1 boiled egg w/wheat toast, a small fruit and 1/2 cup low fat milk or 6 ozs decaf coffee /hot tea with splenda and most importantly water, medication and checking my numbers twice daily or as directed by your doctor.
Blessings to you all!!! 😁
I eat a string cheese stick or Special K protein bar as my protein snack at night they are very good and have low sugar and high protein and great flavors.
Hello all, I hope everyone can see this reply. First of all, thank you all for the advice about the protein bars and your daily regimens. Since last being here I went on a little search for protein bars. Went to CVS Pharmacy and found a protein bar with less than 2 grams of sugar. The bar is called Quest. I think I bought a double chocolate or something like that. I purchased 2 of them. so I ate one late at night. I ate the whole thing. Then the next couple of nights I had the other one but I found myself eating only half the bar. Maybe I drank some water with it. That satisfied me. I go to Shoprite supermarket near me and oh my god! They have loads of protein bars and cookies. So many I couldn't look at then all. But I did happen to find one that was peanut butter and something else with only 3 grams of sugar. I bought 2 because they were 2 for $3.00. I got dizzy looking at all those bars. So anyway once again I found myself only eating a half of bar at night. i keep them on my nightstand just in case and I have my water or crystal light if I need to drink. Other than that I try to eat sensible during the day. Last night I made roasted vegetables with sweet potatoes, onions, bell peppers and smoked turkey sausage. My lunch for today. I eat my omelets in the morning, or 2 hard boiled eggs with an avocado. For lunch I might have a sandwich. Cutting back on bread and pasta and I don't even miss it. Dinner may be homemade black bean soup. So I think I am doing good here. Trying to keep that A1c down. my last test it was 5.7. Is that good or bad? All of this is hard work!!!! going to try that yogurt with sugar free Jello too.
Thanks for listening.
I snack on 1/2 unsalted mixed nuts 2 hours before bed and water. Those protein bars are low carbs but check the sugar grams before you purchase them. I also like a peanut butter sandwich on 1 slice of whole wheat bread and a small apple.
Blessings to you all!! 😁
The only problem, says Jessica Janc, a certified sports nutritionist with the National Association of Sports Nutrition, is that not all protein bars are created equal — many protein bar brands are so loaded with sugar, they’re more like delicious candy bars than dietary supplements. The key, Janc says, is selecting a protein bar with the right building blocks — protein should be at least half the amount of the bar’s carbohydrates. “For instance, if the bar has 24 grams of carbohydrates, I would want it to have at least 12 grams of protein,” Janc explains. “I like the sugars to be below 7 grams and the fat to be below 12 grams.”
New from General Mills, Nature Valley Chewy Protein bars are high in protein and low in sugar, and you don’t have to go to a fancy health-food store to find them. With delicious flavors such as peanut butter, dark chocolate and peanut, almond, and dark chocolate, these bars are a win-win.
Opt for the smaller-sized Detour bar for a low-calorie snack option that still packs 15 g of protein. “Detour bars taste great and have only 150 calories and 5 grams of sugar plus 15 grams of protein and 34 grams of carbohydrates,” Janc says.
