What Is Metformin And How Does It Work?

What Is Metformin And How Does It Work?

Metformin is the most common diabetes medication on the planet.

Some hate the stuff, others question it, some can't tolerate it, most of the rest simply take it and get on with their business.

Since just about all of us have at least heard of the stuff, I put together a piece on it to shed some light on this medication.

The source of today’s Metformin is a traditional and natural/herbal remedy that was first medically researched in 1918 - so if you want "natural" this is it.

The plant was… read more

@A DiabetesTeam Member unfortunately there is somewhere between 5 and 10% of patients that just never tolerate metformin (made my father violently ill and he really tried to give it a good shot).

Had Anyone Had Success With Adding Januvia To Existing Metformin?

Had Anyone Had Success With Adding Januvia To Existing Metformin?

My husband was diagnosed several years ago. Had only been on Metformin which kept his numbers under control. Recently his A1C went up to 8.1 Dr has recommended adding 100mg of Januvia once a day. We have a 21 day sample supply. Has anyone had success with adding this drug?

@A DiabetesTeam Member, it depends on what insurance you have. I’m with Ambetter, and my twice daily dose of Janumet, which is Januvia/Metformin combo, costs me $30 a month - my generics are $0.

Why Is Metformin The First Drug Prescribed For Type 2's?

Why Is Metformin The First Drug Prescribed For Type 2's?

Lot's of new faces in the group and if they are anything like most of the (audience) I see with the Wellness Group I work with, the newly diagnosed have many unanswered questions - sometimes, there is questions they don't even know to ask.

Most of us are treated by a Primary Care (PCP), General (GP) or Family Doc that probably doesn't have a great in depth knowledge of Diabetes and they treat based on the "Treatment Guidelines for Type 2" which is produce (and updated every couple of years) by… read more

Interesting. I am taking about the same and I was told by my doc that they were okay to take all at once, that they were basically time release and that it didn't matter. If it's working for you… read more

Can You Skip A Few Days Of Metformin If You Are Experiencing Nausea And Vomiting

Can You Skip A Few Days Of Metformin If You Are Experiencing Nausea And Vomiting

I am having an issue due to Ozempic causing severe nausea and vomiting to the point that I became severely dehydrated. I won't be taking any more Ozempic but until it's all out of my system, I am still very nauseous. Is it okay to skip my metformin dose until I feel better?

A DiabetesTeam Member said:

If your pills are 500 mg each, then yes some diabetics do take up to 2000 mg per day.

I believe it is the maximum dose (although some doctors may prescribe up to 2500 mg I believe)

Januvia?

Januvia?

I was diagnosed with Type 2 a year ago. Doctor started me out on Metformin. In that period of time the dose got up to 2500 once a day, with Victoza added. I was so sick and fatigued I could barely get out of bed everyday. I kept telling my doctor about the fatigue, vomiting, he didn't change my meds. I found another doctor who recognized my adverse reactions to the drugs, and took me off of them.. Now I am on 100 mg of Januvia daily... so far no bad side affects. My AIC is 5.8. Is anyone else on… read more
