Are diabetics doomed to renal failure eventually no matter how well they treat their disease?

Are diabetics doomed to renal failure eventually no matter how well they treat their disease?

My father was first diagnosed with diabetes when he was around 50, with what I can recall he didn't take it too seriously, when he was around 70 he started having kidney problems and by 75 he was in end stage renal failure requiring dialysis 3 hours a day 3 days a week. He ended up passing away in his sleep but my concern is blindness and end stage renal failure and I strive to keep my A1C at around 5.6 if possible. My… read more

Belly fat tips.

Belly fat tips.

I am concerned about the health effects associated with belly fat. Though I've lost nearly thirty pounds and wish to lose ten more, my stomach is a source of contention for me. I can't seem to get rid of it and wondered what has worked for you. I've read that many of you contribute the belly fat to metformin, which I'm on as well, but I've always struggled with abdominal fat. In order to not have it, before developing t2, I had to weigh around 110 pounds, which may seem like it's very small but… read more

How do you deal with others (non-diabetics) eating your food?

How do you deal with others (non-diabetics) eating your food?

This is a frequent source of anger brought on by my frustration with knuckleheads. I don’t need anger or anything else negative in my life so I need to turn to y’all here - which I should have done a long time ago. Bear with me, please, I feel like I’m dealing with morons.
Y’all know the drill. I’m diabetic. There’s a lot of stuff I can’t eat. I buy what I can eat and I have to share fridges. I find that others eat my food “because it’s healthy”. More… read more

Worried about low blood sugar levels.

Worried about low blood sugar levels.

I don't want to sound too ignorant, asking so many questions. It's just that I watched my dad go downhill from complications due to Diabetes and eventually pass away after a sad struggle. I was much younger and I wish I would have taken the time to learn more about the disease so I could have helped him live a healthier lifestyle. .
I'm pretty committed to living the healthiest I can with this disease so I admit I get a little paranoid from time to time when I feel bad or get… read more

Is there anything missing from your diabetes support system?

Is there anything missing from your diabetes support system?

Does your diabetes support system provide all you need or want? If there is something else you feel would be helpful. please post it here. Maybe if we post what we feel is missing in our support system, we can help evolve better systems. what do you think?

For me, I would like to have some support via a social group of diabetics. A fairly informal group that gets together, maybe once a month for things like potlucks and BBQs, for all types of diabetics.… read more
