I had a podiatrist that cut my toenails to the quick. They got very sore. I changed podiatrist and the new one doesn't cut them to the quick. Oh, the podiatrist I had previously yanked a hangnail from my toe and it even pulled the skin off down the side of my big toe. It bleed really good. Very unprofessional. I did give her bad review.

Great question — and one that's more important than it might seem! For people with diabetes, foot care is a big deal. Nerve damage (diabetic neuropathy) can reduce sensation in the feet, meaning a small nick from clipping could go unnoticed and turn into a serious infection.

Great question — and one that's more important than it might seem! For people with diabetes, foot care is a big deal. Nerve damage (diabetic neuropathy) can reduce sensation in the feet, meaning a small nick from clipping could go unnoticed and turn into a serious infection.

Here's what to keep in mind:

- If you have neuropathy or poor circulation, it's strongly recommended to see a podiatrist for nail care to avoid accidental cuts or injury
- If your diabetes is well-managed and you have good sensation in your feet, clipping your own nails can be okay — but careful technique matters
- Always trim nails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails
- Avoid cutting too short, as this increases the risk of injury
- Use clean, proper nail clippers to reduce infection risk
- Check your feet every night for any cuts, sores, or changes When in doubt, leave it to a professional. A podiatrist is trained specifically in foot care and can safely manage nail trimming while also checking for any early warning signs of complications. It's a small step that can make a big difference in protecting your long-term foot health.

I have a $50 co pay for specialists. So yeah I cut my own and use a scalpel on my calluses.
I still have feeling in my feet . But when and if I get neuropathy that causes it I will have to give up something to fit a podiatrist in my budget!
