Why is it crucial to drink so much water when taking Jardiance or Farxiga?

When on these meds my doctor wanted me to drink extra water. She also advised to drink Gatorade zero to keep my electrolytes in balance.

I was only on Farxiga shortly. I got transferred to Trulicity. I am prone to yeast infections. Luckily my doctor keeps something on file at the pharmacy to help with that. Thank you @A DiabetesTeam Member for sharing

@A DiabetesTeam Member I drink enough water plus other liquids. I have an insulated cup in my car so that I always have something to drink. I do the same at home and always have a drink next to my chair or in the room I am working in. I have never been rone to yeast infections and haven't had a issue with them. I have been taking farxiga for years.

My doctor was hesitant about putting me on it. She was scared I wouldn't drink enough water. It can help with yeast infections, drinking more water @A DiabetesTeam Member

It make sense since farxiga remove sugar through your urine. I wasn't told to drink more water but I do make sure I stay hydrated and know where I can stop to go the bathroom when needed

When you're dehydrated with diabetes, things can snowball quickly:

- Your blood sugar becomes more concentrated, pushing levels even higher
- You may feel tired, dizzy, or confused
- In serious cases, it can lead to kidney stress or diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a dangerous condition where the body becomes too acidic Your doctor's advice to drink extra water makes total sense given how these medications work. Staying well-hydrated helps your kidneys function properly and keeps blood sugar from getting too concentrated.

The Gatorade Zero tip is also smart. Since you're urinating more frequently, you can lose electrolytes like sodium alongside fluids. Replacing those electrolytes helps prevent an imbalance without adding sugar or extra carbs that could spike blood sugar.
