Can you regain muscle mass lost due to diabetic complications? The good news is that in many cases, yes — it is possible to rebuild lost muscle, even for older adults living with diabetes. However, progress can be slower if blood sugar remains uncontrolled or complications are more advanced. Here are some key strategies that can help rebuild muscle mass:

- Resistance training — Exercises like weightlifting or bodyweight workouts are the most effective way to rebuild muscle. Walking is great for blood sugar control but doesn't fully replace resistance training.
- Spread protein intake throughout the day — Rather than eating most of your protein at dinner, try to include it at every meal. Good sources include:
- Lean meats
- Fish
- Eggs
- Greek yogurt
- Beans and lentils
- Tofu
- Keep blood sugar well managed — Consistently controlling diabetes reduces inflammation and supports healthier muscle metabolism.
- Follow your medication plan — Some diabetes medications can affect body composition, so always discuss any changes with your doctor.
- Monitor glucose regularly — Staying on top of blood sugar levels supports better overall health and recovery.
- Manage stress — High stress increases inflammation, which can slow progress.

If kidney disease is a concern for you, speak with your doctor before making big changes to your protein intake, as adjustments may be needed.

@A DiabetesTeam Member I exercise but as I get older I do less strenuous exercises. Whether you have diabetes or not your muscles will atrophy if you don't use them. So we have no choice. We need to move. If you can find movements that you are comfortable with that is best. Moving to music, going for a walk, etc. Doing nothing with atrophy your muscles. Take care and best wishes.
