You weren't entirely wrong to be cautious, but the answer isn't black and white. Fasting can be risky for people with diabetes, but it's not automatically dangerous for everyone. The safety really depends on individual circumstances.

If you are prone to big swings high or low I would discourage fasting. For those who swing both ways I suggest grazing! Personally I find fasting helpful.

If you are taking insulins or sulfonureas you could have a severe hypo and die with fasting.
There are problems if you are doing other diabetes medications too.
Only fast with a doctors tight oversight if you are diabetic.
Personally I have fasted for 45 years. 4 days - 4x each spring and 4x each fall.
I am now doing diabetes medications. I will not fast anymore.
