Can you still apply for disability benefits at 73 with diabetes?

Yes, you can apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) if you're 73 with diabetes. SSI provides benefits to people who are 65 or older, have a disability, or are blind, and have a low income.

To qualify for SSI, your monthly income must fall below certain limits. For 2025, if your income is from a pension or other nonwork sources, it must be below $987 for individuals or $1,470 for couples. You also cannot have additional resources valued at more than $2,000 for an individual or $3,000 for a married couple.

You'll need to provide personal information, medical documentation about your diabetes, and proof of your income and resources. Medical evidence is especially important, so make sure your diabetes care team documents your condition thoroughly.

You can apply online if you meet certain criteria, in person at a local Social Security office, or by calling (Phone number can only be seen by the question and answer creators).
