Hi warriors
Diagnosed February 2021, A1C 13.5. 3.5 months later A1C was 4.9. Clinical Remission.

I control my diabetes with right eating, portion control, Japanese science and medicine, exercise if your doctors allow, attitude, and a compelling reason to do what is necessary. I sleep 6-7 hours nightly, 8 is better. I do 10-15 minutes self care daily. Baby steps.

I test at least 4-6 times daily
1) upon waking- fasting blood glucose number, less than 7.0(126) is good.
2) 2 hours after eating… read more

Members shared diverse and practical strategies for managing diabetes through diet, with the most common approaches including low-carb eating, portion control on smaller plates, careful carb counting, and regular blood sugar monitoring using CGMs or fingerstick tests. Several members described specific methods that have worked for them, including a Japanese-inspired eating order (vegetables first, then protein, then carbs), walking after meals to flatten glucose spikes, cutting out or severely limiting rice, potatoes, and pasta, and building meals around non-starchy vegetables with moderate protein and minimal carbs. A recurring theme was the challenge of balancing diabetes management with other health conditions like kidney disease, thyroid issues, and swallowing difficulties, yet members consistently emphasized taking baby steps, allowing occasional treats in moderation, and celebrating victories like significant A1C improvements and weight loss while supporting each other through the ongoing learning process.

Portion control, reading labels, and watching carbs.

Good day. I am currently doing exercises and proportioning of carbs-vegetables-protein and work in progress. Rice is a staple in the Philippines and eaten from am to pm. Used to eat 2-3 cups of rice per meal, now only 1 cup proportioned mostly 1/2 in the morning or lunch and the other 1/2 for dinner before 8pm. Vegetables take 1/3 up to 1/2 of my plate and meat/seafood/fowl about 1/5 of the plate. Cheat days often happen during family gatherings but still try to do proportioning-hard to do though. Weight has gone down 60lbs since mid-2023, A1C is still at pre-diabetic range and work in progress.

What gets me is that the doctors attending to me wants me to stay about 10-15% above my ideal weight for my age. I was advised that I needed the fat for the time I get sick. Currently, researching that advice. Have a great week ahead.

Same here. CGM is a game changer. A1C 5.2-5.4. I can't cheat too much because of my reactive hypos but keto ice cream is pretty good 😋

I follow a Low Carb/High Fat Diet (last 8 years and counting)

60% of my calories from Fat and 20% each from Carbs and Protein (target is/was 55% Fat, 25% protein, 20% carbs but I have never got there - but given my A1C has been Sub-6.0% since late 2016, without medication, I don't feel a great need to mess with what's working)

Count Carbs for every meal/snack (as well as calories for weight maintenance)

Since I wear a CGM I monitor my pre/post meal numbers and adjust meals as necessary to Stay In Range

If I see a box of donuts sitting on a desk I give them a wide berth so that they don't escape, tie me to a chair and force themselves down my throat

Do I still "on rare occasion" eat Pizza (2 slices), French Fries or a Chocolate Donut?

Sure do, but it's rare as in maybe once a month rare and it's always 2 slices or a small fries or 1 donut

My doctor wants me to gain. I get cold easy, and she said I didn't have enough of fat on my body to keep me warm. I also lost 60 pounds, but I gained 5 back. I'm still in the diabetic range, I questioned her about weight gain affecting my A1C, she said we would deal with that as we go along. Apparently fat is beneficial for your body, but in moderation. I'm proud of you Paul, losing that weight, but it can be as difficult to gain as it is to lose, especially having to watch your diet🩵
