Is Brown Rice Ok To Include As Part Of A Diabetic Diet Versus Normal White Rice?

Brown rice is marginally better than white rice, but I find it has almost a many carbs @A DiabetesTeam Member.

A better alternative is to make your rice early in the morning or the night before and refrigerate it. Then reheat it when you want to eat it.

I believe the cook, refrigerate, heheat cycle must change its digestive properties and so it digests more slowly, lowering the post meal glucose spike.

I find I can eat 2xs as much rice as previously with a similar number.

A serving of rice is 15 carbs. That is about 1/3 cup. Try eating 1/3 cup rice prepared this way and see what your 2 hour number is. You can then adjust the amont you eat to get the number you are comfortable with seeing.

Good luck. I stumbled on this trick by accident over a year ago. It also works with pasta, and potatoes. It is somewhat effective when I make sourdough bread.

Again good luck.
Have a wonderful day.
Never give up, never surrender, never ever.

Chicken marsala with beans, no rice, no pasta. Amazing. I often have chicken marsala over freash spinach. Also amazing and tasty.

Hello and welcome @A DiabetesTeam Member Great question! I suspect the only way to answer that is to test your blood glucose with a home monitor and test strips (90 mins to 2 hours) after eating the brown rice and see how well your body handles that carb load. I do know that the portion of brown rice is reduced to 1/2 cup (or less) for those diabetics who can eat it without spiking their numbers.

I began my journey by eliminating all starchy foods (breads, rices, potatoes, etc..) and then gradually adding the healthiest versions back, once I lost weight. I can now eat 1/2 cup of brown rice- BUT can't include any other carb laden food in that meal without spiking my bg number. So I can no longer eat red beans and rice. :( Some people on this site can't tolerate any rice. Enjoy the journey-half the trick is finding healthier substitutes.
