Hot Flashes - Could Be Blood Sugar Related?
A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi all, I’m 68, had hysterectomy 20 years ago. Suddenly, I’ve been getting hot flashes, 3 this week alone, about 2 to 2 1/2 hrs after eating - twice it was after lunch; once after breakfast.

I will talk to my doctor, but wonder if anyone has experienced this? From consulting Dr. Google, it seems there are many possible causes. I’m also concerned that it may be blood-sugar related. I am on many meds - for depression, asthma, cholesterol, high blood pressure, and have taken thyroid for several… read more

Hot flashes. I experience a constant cycle of boiling 20-30 minutes, freezing 20-30 minutes, repeat, repeat, repeat.

So for me I can see, no correlation to blood glucose levels. Then again I test so often and control my blood glucose in such a tight range that for me highs or lows are such a rare occurrence, that I have had only 2 hypos, almost 2 years ago.

Maybe, I should induce a level of 3.9(70) by exercise without my pre-exercise routine of eating to prevent a hypo and monitor closely and often. I will think about it.

Good luck. I pray you will find your answers. Scientific inquiry is another thing I appreciate.

A hot flash is for me one of the first signs that my glucose is heading towards hypo level.Palpitations follow if not treated asap. Can you measure bs during flash?.There is condition called reactive hypoglycaemia which causes glucose to drop approx 2 hrs after eating, could be that .could be thyroid meds- when mine needs adjusting i get hot and cold flashes.

Well @A DiabetesTeam Member, that would be rosuvastatin. I do 40mg for high triglycerides and high cholesterol. I have no side effects in the 5.5 years I have been blessed with rosuvastatin.

I also do 5mg amlodopine for BP. 50mg metropolol for heart rhythm. I have an Albuterol rescue inhaler if needed for asthma. No other prescription medications.

I do know about MAN-opause. I've been blessed with it, also 5.5 years since I've been blessed with those testosterone killers to slow the cancer growth.. My Bride still snickers when I start shivering or when I throw off the blankets 2x an hour each.

She says I needed to get more in touch with my feminine side. I first got the injections to kill my testosterone on Thursday after work. Within 2 hours I began the apparent temperature roller-coaster.

The next morning at the 9am meeting, I told everyone, not to mess with me and explained why because of the prostate cancer. I said that if anyone messed with me, they might not see another day. Just a friendly warning. I warned them all that I was slightly testy.

My testosterone went down from over 1400, to less than 20 in a fortnight. All those hormones were similarly dropped. Normal is 250-400. It hit me hard. A 70 year old woman, who already has much reduced hormones, has more testosterone than me. And testosterone is a small fraction of her hormones.

So I am truly blessed. May others be able to answer you.

Oh wow Pandapat -- sorry to hear that. I'm learning so much about the role of hormones -- it's amazing how intricate and complicated our bodies are. Take good care. Always nice to hear from you.
