Is Diabetes and kidney disease reversible

Hi @A DiabetesTeam Member, and all you warriors.

Yes and no, but it depends on your how much work you are willing to do, and other factors.

Some people do gastric surgery to loose weight. When you lose enough weight to lower your BMI to 18-22% many can attain a bit of reversal for a period.

There has also been some measure of success by reseeding to rebuild the mucosal lining, mucosal resurfacing, of the duodenum. The duodenum is what sends signals to call for insulin from the pancreas.

There is also the artificial pancreas.

One type uses a cgm and an insulin pump.

Another type uses a subcutaneous pouch filled with isles of langerhans, that has to be replenished every few months.

Then there is the cutting edge work of lab growing a pancreas.

Then the promise of 3D printing a pancreas is being explored.

Clinical Remission is simple but not easy. I supercontrol my numbers with no diabetes medications. It is very, very, very hard work.

My A1C started at 13.5 when diagnosed February 2021. 3.5 months later it was 4.9. No diabetes medications, my choice.

But unless there is a cure, I am and always will have diabetes. If I were not diabetic, I could eat half a pizza or a couple of bowls of rice and my 2 hour numbers would be normal. I am limited to 1-2 tablespoons of starches or my numbers blow up.

But my diabetes journey is quite advanced.

Most diabetics can handle 100-130 carbs spread equitable throughout 3-5 meals and 1-2 snacks daily.

Some can only tolerate 80 carbs daily.
Some only 50.
Some only 30.
Then there is me at 15-20 daily and only 5-8 per meal.

We are looking for 2 hour numbers below 139(7.8) to prevent further vascular damage.

If you do that you can arrest diabetic complications and comorbidities.

I wish for you more good days than bad and have many exceptional days too. Be the warrior you never knew you were. Do what you need to do. Baby steps.

And never give up, never surrender, never ever.
You got this.
Have a blessed day.

Yes but you have to understand what that means

Now they (the experts) have defined Diabetes "Remission" as achieving an A1C of under 6.5 for at least 6 months without using any diabetes meds

That means that you have a "clinically non-diabetic" A1C but what it does NOT MEAN is that you no longer have diabetes

What it also means is you only stay in remission as long as you control your blood sugar with diet and exercise - you have not fixed anything

You are not going to get to "normal" and start eating pizza and drinking coke again

It simply means you are super well "controlled" without medications and it is a lot of work to stay that way - you have no meds to lean on if you slip

I have been in "remission" for over 6 years now - I count every calorie and every carb that goes in my mouth. I watch portion sizes, weigh/measure most things that I eat, follow a strict exercise program and wear a CGM and stick test to make sure my blood sugars stay constantly in range

That's what it takes to stay in remission (or reversed if you prefer that term) and I will only stay there by continuing to work hard and keep my fingers crossed that I don't progress

But A1C has been 5.4/5.5 for over 6 years and counting and I don't take diabetes meds - sure, have bragging rights but not much more. I eat far more restricted then most people taking meds because my "diet" is my treatment
