Do We Need To Manage Our Expectations When Living With Diabetes?
A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭

The other day I was watching some show, characters were all excited when one said “Slow Down – you need to manage your expectations”.

I got thinking - does this apply to Diabetics?

The day we get our Diagnosis our Life changes Forever.

I see many who seem to think their next 10, 20 or 30 years have gone down the drain now that they are “Diabetic”.

Whether we choose to ignore it, jump right in with both feet or settle somewhere in the middle Diabetes will be with us for the rest of our days… read more

My middle son calls Diabetis a Fat Person's Disease. That one mortified me, the igornance of my son made me sad, but it his adult age and going full on Vegan and exercising to a frenzy I realized his own fears. Yes gaining excess weight isn't good for diabetics, but being over weight isn't good for anyone period. To single out Diabetics irks me to no end..but I can't stay in that stressed mood..it isn;t worth it. People are gonna think what they want to. I myself aspire to the motto "Education Over Irgnoance" I love researching and do all that I can to help educate my friends and family about my condition.
IT is so important for me to be realistic about my condition. LOL I remember actually crying when I was over 125 FBS when I first began this journey. Now I am ok and know what to do.
Still, I watch some perfectionistic Diabetics have sheer panic attacks when they go over a number like 100. I know though I must be realistic. I will have high days because of the heat and it having nothing to do with how I am eating. I can't control the weather ( though I wish I could) .
I have made great strides and I am proud of myself. I will have good and bad days...but I strive always to have more good days then bad. Also I will splurge now and then. I take my Byetta to help me. I am dilligent on keeping a numbers journal so I can stay ontop of my Diabetis. I am so happy! I am healthier on many levels than I was when I began this journey. I still hike when I can ( maybe slower and more paced, and not as far as I once did) But I live life and I enjoy it. I have learned to make my food amazing and I always fiddle around with recipes to see if I can make them more Diabetic friendly.
This is a wonderful post Graham and I thank you :)

For me to continue a healthier diet, exercise, drink plenty water, follow up with my doctor for A1C, report changes with my doctor or nurse, I like this team of communication and information to thanks all. If needed google diabetic recipes or meals. Be positive and encourage others to be well.

@A DiabetesTeam Member Apparent unexplained weight GAIN is also a symptom of T2. It happens because if one is insulin resistant then the excess insulin in the blood is converted into muscle (if you exercise a lot) or in most cases fat which then makes people more insulin resistant and it becomes a vicious circle.

I’m afraid many in the medical profession don’t seem to understand the difference between causation and correlation and in their confuse state equate weight gain with causing T2 diabetes. If it was that simple then all overweight people would have T2 diabetes which clearly is not the case.

I’ve found that more people have diabetes than i thought. People just don’t talk about it. How sad, because who better than another diabetic to understand and support you. I believe in doing what is best for me and my health and people can think what they want. I think I’m comfortable with this since dealing with a gluten sensitivity also put me in the same position when it came to social gatherings and eating out. My stand against big pharma and using herbs also put me in a different light. I just March to the beat of a different drum and you can either March along or find your own path. I can get pretty vocal about what you should be doing if you have diabetes, some listen and want to do better others don’t. My life hasn’t changed that much except I don’t eat the way I used to and I exercise which is actually a really good thing that I’m pretty sure had I not been diagnosed I’d be putting it off like always so that is a benefit. Who knew there are benefits to diabetes. Being positive is the key for me.

Graham this is amazing! I love it. And it is so true. We are in some ways, better off because if we take this seriously, we are much healthier! I know, I am much healthier than I have been in years! I like eating well . I even like salads now. Lol!
I believe some can reverse diabetes as well. And if I can, I will be grateful. BUT I will always remember that I am thisclose to having diabetes again. And for that I will be always be grateful.
