Can You Follow Your Diet "Forever"?
A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭

Most of us are aware that what we eat can have a great effect on our blood sugar levels.

We have a metabolic disorder so there is no "one diet" with a set number of carbs or calories or fat or protein that will work for all or even most of us.

It mostly comes down to trial and error within a "loose guideline" that can at least give us somewhere to start.

The Diabetes Certified Nutritionists and Dietitians may sometimes seem like they don't know what they are talking about because in the… read more

It's a difference in terminology.Diet conjures up a restricted food intake for a short period, with specific purpose(. Like losing weight),Our adjustment of food intake is a lifelong way of eating.

I would have thought the answer is quite simple. Eat the amount of carbs that does not raise your blood glucose. For me that is no more that 20g carbs a day. Yes, I do go over that limit sometimes and that’s fine with me.

Others can do well on three or four times that amount of carbs - we’re all different.

And that is the problem with dieticians/nutritionists. They don’t focus on that one fact - keeping bgs under control. They also seem to assume that we are idiots and are incapable of eating nutritious foods. You can eat 10g - 20g carbs per day and that can still be nutritious food.

If I ate a “balanced diet” recommended by some/many dieticians/nutritionists I’d probably be dead now or at the best crippled by complications.

There’s no one-size-fits-all for us diabetics. Our responses to food are different

Good afternoon Everyone 😊💖, when I joined this group maybe 5 years ago it was getting support for my husband who's type 2 and for my blood pressure. I didn't imagine that I would be diagnosed as pre diabetic last year in February of 5.7 but I had the heads up with support from this group and another group that I found on Facebook also seeing my doctor every 3 months for lab results. In October 2021 I decided to try intermittent fasting. Was it easy? No. Did I cheat? Yes. Because my body had to adjust and I was used to having something to eat in the morning which was programmed from living with my mother and I decided on this fast that I would have warm lemon after dressing and hot tea when arrive at work before 9am and plenty water, sometimes drink a bottle of crystal light lemonade 🍋 to boost my energy because I'm stuck in my classroom except bathroom breaks and lunch was either 1:30pm or 2:30pm but by noon felt hungry so I tweaked my fast again to having a peanut butter breakfast bar or peanut butter crackers with my hot tea before work along with drinking plenty water throughout the day. I was able to stay comfortable and have two meals of lunch and dinner up to this point. I've lost weight down to 150 pounds with more energy. Also my doctor and I are both pleased. My sugar numbers are now 5.5 and I still see my doctor every 3 months although he offered 6 months. I'm just stating that this works for me. There's no perfect person only God 💕🙏. Graham, you have been my biggest support and Johanne along with Elmo, Judy and plenty others of encouragement and love also wisdom praise God and I love you all! 😊
Hugs from Iola.

I agree to be honest i started my (diet)10 weeks ago. Does it suck? Yep sure does but having a heart attack, losing a foot, or going blind would really suck. So i been on a Keto diet mostly, lost 18lbs so far Have i cheated yep sure have. I eaten beans , potato 2 times. Bread once. For me growing up that was a staple at lunch dinner and snacks. But my goal is to lose weight exercise more. I haven't joined a gym yet but going too. I have walked in beautiful 40-50 degree days and i also walked when -15 degrees and -40 wind chill. South Dakota can be harsh winters. But in the end my goal is get this under control. Do i miss pizza, chips, candy bars sure do but i know i can't eat that stuff. I have found Atkins does make some fake candy Mand M peanuts that taste just like real thing.

The way I am eating now and writing down all the nutritional values for everything I eat then adding it all up at the end of the day carbs and calories I now feel that this is what works for me so I will do this from now on to the best of my ability since its been a bit over two years now I have been journaling everything and that works for me for weight loss now down 72.2 lbs, maintenance and blood sugar regularity even though it can be difficult being a Type 1 and in perimenopause but I will do the best I can and not be too hard on myself when things don't always go according to plan. ONE DAY AT A TIME....🙂
