This is called "dawn phenomenon" and it's a royal pain.

Current research suggests eating a high fiber snack before bedtime can help lower it. I've had some luck with this.

I've had luck with these things, too...
Exercising before bedtime
Not eating for 4 hours before bedtime
Getting a snack and drinking water at 3am (couldn't sleep)
Keeping stress under control before bedtime and after waking up
Keeping carb intake under control
Increasing water intake
Sleeping through the night

The best luck (and destressor) I've had is to realize that this earliest reading is gonna suck no matter what I do.

I have tried "unsuccessfully" to effect my fasting numbers, at different times using a number of methods.

I have not found an effective way to "significantly" change fasting numbers.

My longtime fasting average (was) 5.7/103 which was "pretty good" but it bugged me that I couldn't get it consistently in the "normal" range sub-5.5/100 so I started reading and tried all the "natural" methods whether they sounded reasonable (clinical trials) or voodoo.

What worked "a little" was adding a fiber supplement (10 grams a day total of a soluable fermentable fiber) combined with a Probiotic (selected with the help of my dietitian containing strains that complement the way I eat).

That took my long term average down to 5.3/95. So not "toss your meds if you run really high" but it did get me into the "normal" range "on average".

I still get morning where I'm above normal 5.7 or 5.8 (103/104), so while staying on my fiber/probiotic supplements, I started experimenting more and trying to figure "why" some mornings were higher than normal.

I charted total carbs the day before, number of carbs later in the day, protein later in the day, exercise before bed (as opposed to after supper which is my standard) - just about everything I could think of along with different supplements (garlic pills, more/less fiber, cinnamon capsules and a half dozen other things).

The only thing I did note was that "sometimes but not always" if I got close to my total daily max carb intake (125 net carbs) I was more likely to have a higher Fasting number then if I stayed to my average of between 80 and 90 net carbs a day. But that didn't always hold true - a couple of my lowest fasting numbers came after eating over 110 carbs the previous day. My theory was the extra carbs were getting converted and stored by the liver which dumped "a little extra" overnight because it was there - but that was only true about 60-70% of the time - so maybe just coincidence.

The moral of my story is: I'm still looking for the another secret to effecting FBS "without meds". The fiber/probiotic combo seems to have worked "a little" for me - over a year now with a 5.3/95 average FBS, but nothing else "so far" has been able to reduce the couple of over 5.5/100's that I see in any given week.

I have the same problem. Every morning my blood sugar is high. I know that this does happen to certain people and if not eating several hours before going to bed and exercising during the day doesn't help I would do an internet search or go to the American Diabetes Association.

I would look at journaling what you are eating. Find your carbs and choose lower carbs. Eat high roughage vegetables and 1/4 cup brown rice or quinoa. 2 fruits a day , Keto like diets have helped me feel satiated but going to low carb I lost 10 lbs in 6 days. Keep in touch with md, or talk with dietitian. Exercise like walking 10 min 1 to 3 times a day will help . Water is very important. What is your A1C?
