Thoughts On Soda Stream?
A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭

What are the thoughts on soda stream machines? I have a serious soda habit. I don’t like flavored sparkling water, though. Is soda stream more like real soda?

Soda Stream is simply a (machine) to carbonate water - "your water". It does a good job of carbonating and there are a number of flavours you can add or any concoction of your own, but it doesn't taste "as good as or better than" a factory made can of soda which is consistent, quality controlled etc etc.

(We) sell Soda Stream at work and the replacement canisters are the single largest selling product (in total units) by over 4 times "any other product" - people have really bought into the "better" message that the genius who did their marketing thought up. In fact, the little company (that was in Israel that started it) got so popular that Pepsi bought them out about a year or so ago.

So whether you buy soda stream or buy soda off the shelf at the grocery store, Pepsi is getting your money - they want you to "buy both" to compare, they make more money that way (sorry, a little cynical).

I find the whole system expensive when you can buy a giant bottle of soda on sale usually for a buck or less - you just can't make it yourself as well or as cheap and it doesn't taste (to me) as good as the factory stuff. Some of the diet/zero sugar's on the market now actually taste pretty good (I can't personally tell the difference between the Canada Dry diet/regular Gingerale - both taste like gingerale). There is even a brand out there made with Stevia - I hate the taste of Stevia but many like it - so their are options.

But if you are looking for a "real soda" taste, Soda Stream won't exactly do it for you...

I really don’t know but I would think like everything else there must be a “diet” flavor.
