Members discussed why a doctor recommended avoiding oatmeal and cereal on a low-carb diet, with many explaining that both are high in carbohydrates that convert to sugar and can spike blood glucose levels. Several members shared practical strategies that work for them, including eating steel-cut oats instead of processed varieties, limiting portions to half a cup, pairing oatmeal with protein and healthy fats, walking after meals, and drinking plenty of water to support stable blood sugar and overall health. A recurring theme was that while oatmeal can benefit cholesterol and provide whole grains, portion control and individual blood sugar monitoring are essential for people with diabetes.

I was told you could eat the Oatmeal if it is the "Steel Cut" variety, which tastes a little strange if you are used to the other. It isn't processed much and they said it was ok. But not cereal.

My husband is type 2 diabetic and his Dr said he can have 1/2 cup of oatmeal or bran flakes, a small apple or orange and 1/2 cup low fat milk. It doesn't spike his bs numbers. We walk after each meal and drink 4-6 cups of water daily for health and happiness.

Oatmeal and cereal both are high in carbohydrates. I know my sugar goes off the charts if I eat cereal.

it is good for you. But if you are a diabetic it's not good for you it's high on carbs which turn into sugar.

I also, eat bran flakes cereal or multi grain cheerios with 1/3 cup of blueberries and 1 cup (8 ozs. soy milk ) which is good for my cholesterol. I like boiled eggs too but they make me gassy so I occasionally eat 2 fried eggs, 2 strips of turkey bacon, small fruit but mostly cherries or strawberries, sometimes cherry tomatoes and soy milk. I eat very little bread.
