Members shared inspiring stories in response to the question about managing blood sugar through diet alone, with many describing years of successful medication-free control through cutting back on sweets, starches, and processed foods while increasing vegetables, protein, and daily exercise. Several members reported dramatic A1C improvements, including one who dropped from 8 to 6.5 in seven months at age 64, and another whose mother remained diet-controlled for over 40 years without complications. A recurring theme was that managing diabetes through lifestyle is possible but requires commitment, patience, and the understanding that illness or major stress can sometimes trigger the need for medication even after years of successful control.

I did for 15 years, and then believe it or not, I got a serious kidney infection and the influenza virus and it triggered me into being a full on Type 2 diabetic needing medication to stabilise my sugar levels. Apparently this can happen if your body is put under massive stress caused by a death in the family, bad illness etc.

I have controlled my BS for 7 years by cutting way back on starches. I still eat them but not often and hopefully not much when I do. Mainly protein, veggies and fruit. It seems to work for me.
