@A DiabetesTeam Member Hello! There is a thing called Dawn Phenomenon. As I understand it. while you sleep, your metabolism slows, as morning approaches, you body releases hormones to get your body ready for an active day. One of these hormones tells your liver to release carbs into the blood stream, enough so your morning test can be higher in the morning than when you went to bed.
I have the same problem and finally learned about the Dawn Phenomenon. That made sense when I know it was better before bed. I can feel those hormones start in the morning because my body temp goes up.
@A DiabetesTeam Member I went on Victoza (lowest dose) and that cured it:)) hope that helps
@A DiabetesTeam Member Having a discussion with your Dr, is probably the best advice I could give, In the mean time, what you do about blood sugar that is higher in the morning depends on how high it is. If it stays in an "acceptable" range as defined by your medical support team, then it should be fine. If you start getting numbers that go out of your acceptable range,, there are some things you can try. Unfortunately, most of the information on the internet seems to be targeted at insulin depended, the people most affected, so it can be difficult to find what helps you.
I'm not on insulin or meds, If I have slacked on my exercise (as I do in summer heat) , my morning numbers are higher. So, what has helped for me:
- Maintain my regular diabetes routine, including exercise
- Do at least some of that exercise after dinner.
- Have a small snack with a few carbs, and some protein or fats, like nuts. A snack with no carbs, and/or no proteins or fat do not seem to work for me.
This is what helped for me, but it does not seem to work for everyone. It may take some trial and error to find what works for you.
Blood sugars rise naturally thru the night because while we`re asleep we`re inactive & not moving around, it causes dry mouth & thirst/ As soon as we get up in the morning & start moving around our thirst & dry mouth disappears brcause exercise/moving around immediately starts to lower our blood sugars it as simple as that!
