Numbness In Hands
A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭

For the last week I've been waking up with both my hands totally numbed (feels like they fell alseep) It is going up my left arm and now seems to be constant. Is this normal? I take 500mg of metaformin in the morning. My doctor doesn't have me testing my sugar. I have no idea what I'm suppose to be doing and eating. He has me come in about every 3 months for bloodwork. Any help and direction would be greatly appreaited.

Sounds like your doctor is not giving good direction, I would look into changing. Ask friends for recommendations, that's what I did, and love my doctor. I also take 500 Metformin, but I take mine at night. A lot of great ideas on here too, and a lot of good info online.

Have you been tested for carpel tunnel? It's more common these days. I have it in both hands from working on a factory and a.bakery

I personally disagree with not testing. You cannot possibly know what it happening with your glucose levels or your body if you don't have the data. If your doctor won't prescribe a meter, you can get them free online. I still think the strips are pricey though. I went with a subscription service for mine so I can have as many strips as I want per month. You can check out One Drop and Livongo for that. Testing has made a lot of difference for me.

Donna Dannunzio u should get a meter,it should include a lancet and some strips (usually 25)if there is a wal mart near u the best meter is a Relion Prime because the strips r only 9.00 for 50(Relion is made for Wal- Mart) lots of places will give u a free meter, its the strips that r expensive and the meter is a one time buy. I don't understand ur Dr. not telling u to test. r u newly DX. there r many helpful sites on the internet. diabetessite.com, diabetes connect.com, lifescript.com,dlife.com,type2diabetes.com, Americandiabetesassoc.com there is a well of info to tell u what to eat, when to test, when to take ur meds I also take 500 mg. of Metformin I take extended release which works 24/7 I take mine at night because u can control ur sugar in the day with ur diet so taking it at night helps with ur fasting morning sugar when u don't eat for at least 8 hours . good luck u have a better chance of controlling ur sugar if u test to know what foods affect it and what activties and so on affect it. as far as ur hands and arm going numb u should discuss it w/ ur Dr. my hands used to go to sleep on me and my Dr. told me to get splints u can buy at a pharmacy and wear them as much as possible and especially at night they have really helped she did a test in her office for carpal tunnel and thinks thats what it is sometimes they have to b operated on so far so good.
