What Can I Do About Low Glucose Readings At Bedtime.

A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭

I am following a paleo diet to help control my diabetes along with metformin and diamicron. I have successfully lowered my A1C from 6.4 to 5.8 in the last three months. My problem is at bedtime. I try to eat dinner by 6:30PM and do not eat anything after this time. When I test my blood sugar at bedtime it is most often in the 4.1 to 4.9 range, which leaves me with a dilemma . Members overwhelmingly agreed that a bedtime snack is essential when blood sugar drops to the 4.1 to 4.9 range, explaining that it prevents the liver from overcompensating overnight and helps stabilize morning fasting numbers. Several members suggested practical snack options combining 15 grams of carbs with protein, such as crackers with nut butter, trail mix with nuts and dried fruit, a small spinach salad, yogurt, or a handful of almonds, with many noting that protein and fat digest more slowly to sustain blood sugar through the night. A recurring theme was the importance of tracking overnight numbers, working with doctors to potentially reduce medications like Diamicron as diet improvements take effect, and celebrating the success of achieving better control through lifestyle changes.

My diabetes Education team told me I absolutely have to have a snack before bed. I usually have a scoop of frozen yogurt or some cashews and grapes.

I?f your eating dinner at 6:30, you need a snack before going to bed. My doc advised I eat 6 times a day, 3 meals and 3 snacks so your 3rd snack would be before bed, it is necessary to help with the morning levels.
