I've been on Metformin for 9 months now. Didn't have any issues until recently. I now have muscle cramps in the legs and occasional bouts of uncontrollable diarrhea that lasts more than 12 hours. Is it possible for side effects to be showing up this late in taking the medication?

Members overwhelmingly confirmed that muscle cramps and diarrhea are common side effects of Metformin, with many sharing that these symptoms can appear even after months or years of use, sometimes triggered by high blood sugar, certain foods, or dehydration. Several members offered practical solutions, including switching to the extended-release version of Metformin, spacing out doses throughout the day, increasing water intake, taking magnesium supplements for cramps, or asking doctors about alternative medications like Januvia, Glipizide, or Actos. A recurring theme was the importance of advocating for yourself with your doctor if side effects become unbearable, as many members found relief and improved quality of life after switching medications or adjusting their treatment plan.

I took Metformin when I was first diagnosed with T2D last November. I didn't last 3 weeks on it. I was so very sick with Diarrhea and being super dizzy. Doc took me off that right away and put me on [[treatment:Januvia:5612ce4f6bcd619a[[phone:12000360]] 100:]] mg. I lost weight and my a1c went from 7.9 to 6.3 in 6 months. if you take meds for high cholesterol, I would look into that as well for the muscle cramping. Hope this can help you in some way.

I could not take it as I experienced the same side effects. I was very fortunate to lower my sugars with diet and exercise..

Totally Agree with the full sugar vs substitutes. So many substitutes can cause heart palpitations and other health complications.

hiya . metformin is well known for causing diarrhea . and leg cramps can be caused by Statins if your taking them diet tonic water should help with cramping as it contains quinine . hope this is helpful .
