Eat all the veggies you want cut back on carbs switch to whole wheat and whole grain bread and eat high fiber cereals. Eat healthy snacks between meals to keep your blood sugars level with no drastic drop between meals

@A DiabetesTeam Member , I never did adjust to Metformin. I ended up with all sorts of bowel and gastro troubles that did not get better. I gave it 6 months of my life and we parted ways. I was taking 2000 mg and it didn't even lower my glucose! I now am on a combo, Gliclazide in the morning and Januvia in the evening.

I didn't actually feel sick until that nasty drug came into my life. I just cannot do it. Keep a diary of your symptoms and be sure to discuss them with your caregiver. Be honest and be strong. I know Metformin is the "preferred" treatment; but when the so called "cure" makes our lives miserable, it is time to say goodbye. I couldn't leave the house without fear of needing a bathroom during an outing. Going for lunch or coffee with friends (and even my husband) was impossible. My quality of life tanked. That is no way to live.

I had to get quite assertive with my doctor who swore up and down that the symptoms would dissipate and life would be easy on this drug. Well, it wasn't working. I was tired of being sick and tired and asserted myself with the doctor. I researched options and presented them. We chose a new drug and I feel much better now. I can leave the house once again!

I'm glad you found a "treatment" that works for you, @A DiabetesTeam Member . I hope you are being extra careful and mindful and taking extra care of yourself. Nontraditional treatments may work, but just like drug therapies one size doesn't fit all.

Ask your doctor to give you the extended release. I've been on it for a week and my tummy feels great
