My net carb number is probably around 6 - 8 per meal. I don't just look at 2 hours, I look for the spike. I limit myself to a 10 point spike per meal. This has worked for me these last 23 years. Most often my meals have zero net carbs. My typical supper is asparagus, butter, and tuna steaks. My typical breakfast is sausage and eggs. I don't eat lunch. I am just not hungry for lunch anymore at my age of 83. I take 2 grams of Metformin ER each day. I feel blessed to not have any complications. My physician says my last 5.2 A1C is on target. I do exercise.

It is important, because we have a net carbs limit and if we go over that limit our numbers are going to run high. It's not the same with non diabetics. They produce enough insulin to take care of extra carbs

What a wonderfully motivating message from a DiabetesTeam member! The "baby steps" approach to finding your net carb tolerance is a practical and empowering strategy worth sharing.

What Is Net Carb Tolerance?
It's the number of carbs you can eat per meal without your 2-hour post-meal blood sugar rising above your pre-meal reading. Everyone's tolerance is different based on:

- Age
- Weight
- Activity level
- Duration of diabetes
- Current medications Why Does It Matter?
Keeping post-meal spikes in check helps reduce cumulative vascular damage, which is directly linked to diabetes complications. Targeting a 2-hour reading in the non-diabetic range (70–140 mg/dL) is a widely supported goal.

How To Find Yours
1. Measure blood sugar *before* eating
2. Note exactly how many carbs you ate
3. Measure again *2 hours later*
4. Adjust carb amounts until your 2-hour number stays at or below your starting number

Always work with your healthcare provider or dietitian when adjusting your eating plan, as medication changes may also be needed as your numbers improve.

Never give up — you've absolutely got this! 💪
