Why is your spouse losing weight despite having diabetes?
Unintentional weight loss with diabetes can be concerning and may indicate that blood sugar levels aren't well-controlled. When the body can't use glucose properly for energy, it may start breaking down muscle and fat instead, leading to weight loss.
It's really important that your spouse sees their healthcare provider soon to discuss this weight loss. They can:
- Check blood sugar levels and adjust medications if needed
- Rule out other complications or conditions
- Assess overall diabetes management
- Provide guidance on nutrition and meal planning
How you can support your spouse:
Consider working with a registered dietitian who specializes in diabetes. They can create meal plans that help with healthy weight gain while managing blood sugar levels.
A "we're in this together" approach can make a real difference. Instead of asking "should you be eating that?" or "why is your blood sugar high?", try asking "how can I help you?" or offer to join them in making healthier choices together.
This collaborative attitude can reduce anxiety about diabetes and strengthen your relationship while helping manage the condition more effectively.

Thank you. It is frustrating as he refuses to try to control his desires and impulses as far as food is concerned. He already has retinopathy.

It does have to come from him. Until something happens that is diabetic related he may not listen. Basically his cells can't use the sugar in his blood stream for energy(insulin resistance) his body is using his body fat and muscle for energy. That can be why he is losing weight. Hopefully he figures it out soon.
