@A DiabetesTeam Member gonna know your own body! Weigh the risks and do what you find best. I just keep reading whats new so at least I am aware of those risks. And can hold on to the proverbial life saver “control” not sure its real but it gets me through the day!
I have seen the reports as well about artificial's not helping with weight or longevity but I want to see the actual statistics broken down
We have all been in the line at some fast food place and heard the obviously very overweight individual in front of us - "I'll have a Big Mac, Large Fries, Apple Pie and a Diet Coke"
Yes, they remain overweight, yes they may stroke out prematurely so NO the diet coke didn't save them - but it's perspective
I want to see stats for someone following a healthy, under 2000 calorie, under 130 carb a day diet who is getting regular exercise and drinking the diet coke - that would be a fair assessment
I drink "Zero Sugar" soft drinks - my health is better than it has ever been - my odds of dying from heart disease are reduced because I maintain normal weight, take a Statin and an ACE Inhibitor and if the zero sugar drink, which I like, doesn't spike my blood sugar then it's essentially an inert addition to my diet that provides little more than hydration
We have to stop looking for the magic list of Eat this and Don't eat that because the rules are different for every one of us
If artificials don't spike your sugar, use them - if they do, then do the right thing "For You" - but don't buy in to some statistic that likely does not apply "to you" to make the decision either way
Not sure they do keep the beast away. It has been shown that some of us accually get a rise in BS from artificial sweeteners. But they do work for some! You have to know your body and be vigilant in recording what foods work for you. Many foods that we use sweeteners in are already carb laden. And studies have shown that thise using diet sodas do not lose any more weight. And do not live any longer.
I look at it like this - I like the sweet taste and while the sweeteners "may" slightly elevate the rate of cognitive impairment as we age, we will only age if Diabetes doesn't take us out prematurely - and if artificial/polyols/sugar alcohols keep the Beast away so that I Do Grow Old enough, then I'm pretty ok with that
@A DiabetesTeam Member I know sugar is a source of inflamation so certainly does us damage even if we are not diabetic. I am not suggesting we eat more sugar just less artificial. As the study above found a commonality between using artificial sweetners. And cognitive decline.
