How does too much sugar affect someone with diabetes?

Consuming excess sugar can lead to several harmful effects:

1. Blood sugar spikes (hyperglycemia)
2. Increased thirst and frequent urination
3. Fatigue and drowsiness
4. Headaches
5. Dehydration

A helpful tip from a DiabetesTeam member for managing sugar intake: "Portion control. I plate all my food on a 7-inch plate before eating." Long-term complications of poorly managed blood sugar can include:

1. Kidney failure
2. Nerve damage
3. Vision loss

It's important to note that diabetes management isn't just about avoiding sugar - it's about overall blood glucose control. If you're concerned about your sugar intake, work with your healthcare provider or a registered dietitian to develop an appropriate meal plan.

We do not need to obsess about the many possible complications of diabetes. If we concentrate on weight reduction and exercise they will be minimal! Put your energy in accomplishing a low A1c!!!
