To Lose Weight you must eat less calories than you burn

Eating as many calories as you burn will keep weight stable and if you eat more calories then your require then you gain weight - that is the basics

So to lose weight in the situation you describe it's not "what" you are eating but "how much" - reduce the total "portion size" of what you are eating so that you are consuming "less calories" and if you lower below how much you are burning every day, then you will lose weight

Managing weight while living in an assisted facility with limited meal choices can be challenging. Here are some strategies:

1. Use the plate method: Fill half your plate with non-starchy vegetables, a quarter with lean protein, and limit the rice/carbs to just a quarter of your plate.

2. Ask if you can request smaller portions of high-carb items like rice and gravy.

3. Consider splitting meals or saving portions for later to control portion sizes. You might also want to:

1. Talk to the facility's dietary staff about your diabetes management needs
2. Request to see menus ahead of time to plan your portions better
3. Keep some diabetes-friendly snacks in your room for times when the main meal options are too carb-heavy
4. Consider meal prepping some simple healthy items on weekends if you have access to cooking facilities

Remember that small changes in portion control can make a big difference in managing both your weight and blood sugar.
