Hello Thandi
I’m happy to see that you found where to post your question. Well done.
I have found Albany seeded low GI brown bread at SPAR and Checkers.
1 can manage 2 slices. You may only manage 1 slice.
But WHOLEWHEAT bread will be very good for you but eat in moderation.
You need to start the food journal I told you about, to see which food makes your blood sugar number go higher.
Woolies makes a white sour dough bread which I toast.
I can only have one slice of it.
I have 3 tablespoons of oat bran for breakfast. OR ORIGINAL ROLLED JUNGLE OATS.
Cover with water and cook for 30 secs and then another 30 secs in microwave.
Watch that it doesn’t spill over. That’s why I do 30 seconds twice and not 60 seconds once.
If you do not have a microwave, do it in a pot on the stove.
I add yoghurt on top and slices of pawpaw.
Pawpaw lasts for a long time. Once it is cut it must be placed in the fridge.
It does not raise my blood sugar but here, you might be different.
Spar is the only shop where I have found a diabetic friendly yoghurt.
You could also try low fat or fat free amasi/maas which is very good for you.
But again, test your blood sugar 2 hours after each meal, breakfast, lunch and dinner, to see if it reacts.
All testing must be done TWO HOURS AFTER A MEAL.
You also should test your blood sugar within 15-30 minutes on waking in the morning.
Test 2 hours AFTER breakfast to see whether what you have eaten has raised your blood sugar.
Cabbage is the one item that is affordable for most people.
I can eat carrots without raising my blood sugar.
Try parsnips and turnips in your veg, they will be good for you and not likely to raise your blood sugar.
Keep away from potatoes, white rice, and mealie meal.
Try original rolled jungle oats or oat bran.
Keep away from pap.
Google says that you can safely eat SAMP and BEANS. but NOT PAP.
Always control your portions.
Pap is made from maize meal and can cause a moderate rise in blood sugar levels.
Try a tablespoon of pap and see how you go but it probably will raise your BS levels.
Most white foods will raise your BS.
Keep away from sugar.
Try half a banana on your breakfast.
On the bread i suggested or even BROWN BREAD OR WHOLEWHEAT or else on your porridge.
You are the only one able to control your blood sugar levels.
You must do it to prevent possible damage to your kidneys, heart, eyes and limbs and I DO truly understand how difficult this is for all South Africans, because of the high price of food.
Go onto Google as well, for anything that you intend or need to eat.
Ask the question CAN I EAT xxxxxxx AS A SOUTH AFRICAN DIABETIC?
Sometimes Google can’t pick up traditional foods such as pap and amazi, because they are only South African words.
Like madumbi. It’s a SA word.
You can eat madumdis in MODERATION. Not too many.
Sending you love and prayers 🥰🙏🙏🙏
For breakfast, consider protein-rich options like eggs which can keep you full until lunch. Try scrambled eggs with vegetables like peas or tomatoes, or make a quick egg white and cheese mug recipe in the microwave. Another budget-friendly option is oatmeal topped with cottage cheese or yogurt, adding a few berries and nuts Show Full Answer
