Does Anyone Have Neuropathy? Can You Explain What It Feels Like?

A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭
Wisconsin Dells, WI

I am having severe pain in my legs and feet. I have been to many doctors appointments and they can’t figure out what it is. They do t think it’s neuropathy, but the pain is unbearable.

Members responded to someone experiencing severe, unexplained leg and foot pain by distinguishing between different types of nerve pain, noting that while diagnostic tests may rule out neuropathy specifically, the pain could still stem from other forms of neuralgia or vascular issues that warrant further investigation. Several members shared personal experiences, including one who manages neuropathy symptoms through regular walking and alpha-lipoic acid supplementation, and another who discovered their pain was actually caused by vascular blockage (angina) that was resolved after an ultrasound and treatment. A recurring theme was the importance of advocating for thorough testing, including vascular screening, and not dismissing persistent pain even when initial tests come back negative.

Don't have it but have seen it "up close" from beginning to late stage a number of times

It tends to start in the feet

Feet may feel numb at first, then a period experiencing pins/needles

The sensation may move up the leg towards the knee

Then pain starts or a burning sensation or both

Eventually the pain goes away - that's when end stage is setting in

Was a Vascular Specialist amongst the Doctors you have seen? If not it is worth getting checked out

If it's Peripheral Neuropathy as a result of Diabetes, the nerve (pain) is being caused by Vascular damage and can be detected. Hopefully not, but at least get it ruled out

There is many "phantom" nerve pains that they can never find the source of. Fine to medicate away the pain unless that is masking a vascular issue.
