Should I Be Using A Blood Glucose Meter? My Doctor Doesn't Seem To Think So.

hat is really a question for you and your Doctor

The "guidelines" (and all the member countries in our group use the same treatment guidelines exactly) state that for most Type 2's that are NOT using Insulin or Sulfonylurea's there is little "clinical value" in daily "stick testing"

However, many of us look at it another way and we want to know if we are doing something right or wrong and an A1C test every few months just doesn't do that

But if your A1C is in range for whatever target you and your doctor have set, you generally stick to your (program), watch what you eat ect, then there may not be a NEED to test regularly

For me I want to know if something starts to go wrong. I only do an A1C test once a year so if I suddenly progress a month after my test I really don't want to run uncontrolled, doing a lot of damage to my vascular system for another 11 months before anyone "notices"

Think of testing like a seatbelt - maybe almost all the time you really don't need one - until you do and then you are glad you were wearing it

I wear a CGM sensor (Libre2) - I do not take any Diabetic Meds and my last A1C was 5.6 (hasn't been higher than that in 7 years)

Maybe the reason I don't take meds and my A1C is "normal" is because I monitor my blood sugar 24 hours a day - just saying...

been having same that discussion with hc team...who don't think I need to test as much either, but when I do, magic A1C comes into line...explained over and over that I get info and can make adjustments to control this beast...will be changing HC team who seem to think just throwing meds at it is the solution, already shown 30 min walk daily, adjusting diet, exercise times based on readings works...yet they put 3x a day limit on strips for me... alas is what it is. If biz picks up, going to get CGM on my own...for time being have to keep testing 5-7 times a day. For me, I need to just monitor what is going on and will continue to do so and eventually will find another doctor who is on board...
