What Can I Eat?
A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭

Most days we will see that question posted up a number of times

There is no SIMPLE Answer

If you are Type 2 you have a Metabolic Disorder so there is no "list" that applies to all or even most of us, but that doesn't mean you don't have somewhere to start

If you are looking for a "basic list" then it's easier to say what you Shouldn't Eat

If you are looking to lower your Blood Sugar DO NOT EAT:

French Fries or any white potato, no white rice, no white pasta, no white bread, no muffins… read more

I agree it’s different for everyone and for me it’s low carb, no white rice, potatoes, bread, pasta, sugar. I will on rare occasions eat a sweet potato, and I make a cheesey potato that is on the diabetic hub of ADA that I’ll eat 1/2 c of maybe 4 times a year generally it’s a holiday. That’s my extent of my splurging. I make my own gluten free low carb bread as most on the market are expensive and taste terrible. Everyday is a learning experience. I went through the Russell stover sugar free stage which did not affect my bg but I figured it would catch up with me so I stopped now I prefer choc zero as there is no sugar alcohol. I admit I have a sweet tooth, always have so finding something that I can have that does not raise the blood sugar works for me. I eat nuts but need to be careful as walnuts and almonds can mess with my synthroid and throw my tsh levels off. Overtime things change and we need to adjust but my weight has been fairly stable, gained a couple pounds during the holiday bur still within goal range and bmi is well under 25. When I see numbers go up I make adjustments. That’s all anyone can do. We must be ever vigilent when dealing with the beast.

35 or so yrs ago when first diagnosed I started by just cutting portions in half. I lost weight and my numbers were good. But since this is a progressive disease after 4 or 5 yrs my numbers started to creep up. So I tried Atkins it worked great but at that time I was unable to maintain the strictness of no carbs. When I started eating a few carbs my sugar went threw the roof! So went back to the strict diet. My dotor wanted meds but I had seen my mom struggle with side effects. Then A friend suggested I go about adding small amts of the right carbs to get my body accustomed again. So over the next year I gradually added whole grains and beans , nuts, seeds and berries. This kept me at an acceptable level for a few more years than eventually I needed meds. But I gained some weight back and was a mess again. Basically went into denial as I could not face the never eating what I wanted again. So for the next I 15-20 years I had many ups and downs finnally I was but on ozempic and lost weight the first few months. Leveled of and felt better. Then uped my exercise routine and gained weight! But sugar was good so have kept my exercise at a fairly high level. Than last year I tried intermittent fasting and have lost an additional 30 lbs. now my sugar readings are approaching remission.
Its a journey you have to commit to.
And using your meter to check how your body reacts to different foods is how to start. And limiting portion size is a must!
Good luck! Keep us posted on your progress

Great advice. I wish my nutritionist would have told me that when I was first diagnosed. I do eat two very small pieces of ultra thin pizza and it seems I can tolerate that small amount without spiking my BG. I exercise daily. Don’t drink alcohol and only take metformin and 2.5 mg of glipizide once a day. I turned 75 on January 12th. My A1C has been under 6 for the last few years. Appreciate this forum, the knowledge that is shared and support that is given.

I don't eat anything white. No soda, sweets, watch my carbs. A1C is now 5.8. I'm still working on it. Exercise and get off the beer/ alcohol. It's working for me.

Hi GrahamLamb...love it! That's the list that my doctor gave me 17 years ago.
But when I asked him where is the list of what a diabetic can eat??? He just got quiet, so I told I would research it on the computer 😂🤣😂.
This is a new beginning for all diabetics...do your research...try the foods that you can eat, and then ones you eat whatever you are eating take your blood sugars to see if it works for you.
I can't eat most of things because to many diseases. Everyone is different.
Diabetes, chronic kidney disease, hypothyroidism, high potassium and much more, so I can't tell anyone what eat. Do your research for yourself.🙏
