Can Eating Not Enough Carbs Cause Your Post Prandial Number To Be Higher?

It seems when I eat eggs, bacon and toast with butter, bread being keto with 0 net carbs my post prandial numbers are in the range of 103 to 110 which I know isn’t bad but when I eat a breakfast such as French toast and sausage or bacon with berries my numbers are always range 89 to 95. It’s happened frequently enough that it seems like I need to eat some carbs.

Yes

In order for enough hormones to be released to turn the pancreas (insulin) "on" and the liver (glucagon - our bodies blood sugar) "off" you need to consume about 15 net carbs (a little different for each of us since diabetes is metabolic)

So yes, a very low carb (keto level) meal could result in a higher post prandial number since your liver would be (dispensing sugar) practically uncontrolled trying to make up the deficit from lack of dietary sugar (carbs)

This works well if you are eating full Keto and burning ketones instead of carbs for energy, but most of us aren't so need those 15 carbs at 4 to 6 hour intervals to prevent our bodies from going into (fasting) mode - as diabetics part of our problem is uncontrolled sugar released by the liver, so we have to medicate it to stop (metformin) or eat enough carbs to "turn it off"

@A DiabetesTeam Member it goes to show just how varied each individual is when it comes to diabetes and what works for them. I thought going super low carb was the answer but it looks like I need a few more carbs than I’ve allowed. Baby steps, and one day at a time.

@A DiabetesTeam Member thank you for the explanation. You think you are doing the right thing by eat super low carb but for me I can’t go to low. I’m wondering if that is part of the slight rise in my A1C as well. I was doing pretty low carb but not enough or with the right ratio of fat and carbs for keto. I knew I could count on you for an answer. Good to hear from you😃 Thinking of you and your wife.

For me when I eat more carbs than I can handle normally, at 1 hour it goes high, then at 2-3 hours it drops precipitously. I actually get a lower number than normal for me.

But then there is the rub. With the higher than normal number, my vision gets blurry. It takes at least 24 hours for my vision to clear.

When my vision gets blurry, I get a bit grumpy. Not good. I know I could have avoided it and didn't. I get pissed at myself when I don't do what I know I should.

But then I have to forgive myself and let it go.

So give yourself some grace.

I am also wondering if you don’t eat enough during the day it makes your BG higher I eat my big meal at lunch time I have something little for dinner I am not hungry enough to have another meal. Could that be my problem
