There is a "mistaken belief" in some circles that Metformin damages the Kidneys - that is totally and completely false - metformin causes ZERO Damage to the kidneys

What the real message is/was that gets distorted is: IF your kidney function declines below a certain point (for SOME OTHER REASON) then you have to stop taking metformin because if the kidneys can't do their job of evacuating the residue it can build to toxic levels in your blood

That is a whole lot different then "it hurts your kidneys" and really needs to be understood

High blood sugar destroys your kidneys

Metformin reduces blood sugar levels

Metformin is "good for your kidney function preservation" but only IF your kidneys are healthy enough in the first place - if you wreck them or they fail then you have to stop the metformin which was helping save them

Metformin does cause GI issues and in about 5 to 10% of the population they just never adjust and need to stop taking it - but due to "stomach or GI discomfort" nothing dangerous

Metformin is currently being studied as well as a "preventative" against heart disease

And for those looking for a "natural treatment", Metformin comes from a plant (lilac) that grows in Europe - so you don't get less "big pharma" and more "natural" than metformin

If your tummy can tolerate it and your kidneys are healthy enough to filter out the leftovers it is the near perfect drug for diabetes (if you have to take any drug at all)

I've been on metformin since I was diagnosed with diabetes. I've had no problems or side effects from it. I can understand where some people might have issues with it either from reading negative things about it or issues physically from it. It's like any drug and like diabetes. Diabetes is different for every individual so why wouldn't they react differently to metformin?
