How Do Some Of You Stay So Low On Carbs? I Mean Those Of You Under 50 Or 30 Carbs.

Low carb keto for diabetics. Is under a 100 carbs with exercise good? I stay under a 100 on most days. My lat A1C was 5.9

Hi @A DiabetesTeam Member,
Good number.

For myself, my diabetes journey is quite advanced. I can only process 15-20 carbs daily, and keep my numbers good.
Morning Fasting Blood Glucose <126(7.0)
2 hour number <139(7.8)

These numbers prevent further vascular damage, and progression of diabetic complications and comorbidities. I already had quite painful diabetic neuropathy in my feet for 6-9 months prior to diabetic diagnosis. Within 5 months of beginning my ultralow carb right eating lifestyle, the quite painful foot pain was arrested. I am truely blessed.

Every time my numbers are higher than 139(7.8) for 2-3 meals the pain returns. So I do not allow my 2 hour numbers to go above 135(7.5) to allow a little leeway and avoid the neuropathy foot pain. To do that, I have to limit my carbs to 5-8 carbs per meal.

That pain is an early warning sign, for me to do what is necessary. Both my parents passed 30 years ago within 10 years of being diagnosed diabetic, from diabetic complications and comorbidities. That will not be me. That is my compelling reason to do what's necessary in my diabetic journey.

Most diabetics can handle 100-130 carbs spread equitable throughout 3-5 meals and 1-2 snacks.
Some can only tolerate 80 carbs.
Some 50 carbs, some 30.
Then there is me at 15-20.

I eat to my meter, my blood glucose numbers spreadsheet, and my food journal. Baby steps. I can do baby steps and you can too.

Never give up, never surrender, never ever.
You got this.
Have a wonderful day.

Personally, I do not do low carb and I am not on any medicine. In the beginning, I took Metformin for 9 months but did well enough with diet and exercise to come off it. So far, after almost four years, still doing good. Of course, I am aware of what I eat. Guess I just wanted to say that you CAN get off meds (keep in mind that everyone is different!) without going low carb to do so. So if you are struggling, it might be ok to give yourself some leeway and see what happens.

I know I couldn't do it for very long so never even considered Keto - I cap out at 130 net a day but in practice tend to fall in the 100-110 net carbs a day and find it both satisfying and sustainable.

I have already decided if/when that is no longer restrictive enough to meet my blood sugar targets I WILL use meds to deal with the deficit. I watched my Father really mess himself up trying to eat fewer and fewer carbs to avoid medication - didn't turn out well.

Even Atkin's which preaches their 20 or 40 carb/day diets for weight loss know that it's not sustainable over the longer term so they have their 100 carb a day "maintenance diet" where you do the 20 or 40 a day to reach a milestone goal, then "rest for a while" before another short stint on the restricted diet.

With difficulty, as long as I get to cheat every once in a while.
