Is Lantus Better Than Toujeo For A Type 1 Diabetic?
A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭

I was changed to toujeo about 3weeks ago. I take it at night but throughout the night my sugar starts going up. Should it be changed back to lantus? I'm a type 1 and have a dexcom which has been great so far. What is a good recommendation ?

as a T1D I prefer Toujero as it take far less of it to control my glucose levels - for me Lantus takes 3 times the amount to get the same result and it doesn't last in my system the full 24 hours it last around 16 to 18 hours so have to do a split dosage to get 24 hr coverage with lantus.

I'm on trujeo and take 114 units every morning. I don't take any other form of insulin. It did drop my a1c from 7.2 to 6.4 in 3 months. I also can't eat a diabetic diet due to gastroparisis and adheisions on the bowels. I am almost 58.

Thank you. I thought it was just me. I'm on 66 units. And the longer the night gets the less it works. Thank you again.

Toujeo sucked!! Injected 60units a day and it did absolutely nothing. DNC circa four years ago..

But…..everyone reacts differently.

Good luck to whomever is using Toujeo.

Both Toujeo and Lantus are the exact same insulin (glargine) just from two different manufacturers. Lantus is simply a much earlier formulation (2005) compared to Toujeo (2015).

They do however each have their own recipe to go along with the active (insulin). You can think of it like Toujeo simply took Lantus and tried to make it a little better.

Toujeo will last a little longer unrefrigerated, acts a little more slowly (so more uniform control) and is a little more concentrated (so 1 unit of Toujeo is physically smaller than Lantus).

But at the end of the day Insulin Glargine is produced using the exact same formula so the active (drug) is identical.

Theoretically the Toujeo recipe should work "a little more effectively" then the Lantus because they have improved the method of delivery - otherwise it is mostly a matter of choice.
