What Actually Happens With Our Blood Sugar When We Eat?
A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭

While I am fascinated with the process and have read both much about it and how to try and mess with it to better manage my blood sugars, I realize that some many only have a bit of an idea of what is happening, so I’m going to yap a bit.

We all know that when we consume carbs they will raise our blood sugar, some worse or more quickly than others and those that rely on diet as “treatment” do try and figure which ones do what.

Ultimately our concern is “what is food doing to my blood sugar 2… read more

@A DiabetesTeam Member when I was "sorting out my meals" I burned through a few hundred test strips (probably closer to a couple of thousand).

But it really is the best way (unless you want to chuck the dollars for a CGM like Libre for a month) to figure out where "your tolerance" is.

Some food combinations I can eat 40 carbs worth and still have great numbers, others at 25 I'm pushing it - only testing can tell you which is what.

If you are an Oatmeal fan (I am) it's a bit of a combination of finding "how much of what brand" you can handle - some are way worse then others (probably simply by how much they process the oats).

I spend a good few weeks "in the bush" during the year (hunt, fish, ATV ride, canoe etc) and found a "ready to eat" Steel Cut Oatmeal.

Rambling Oat Company (in Illinois) packages a few flavours - their "original classic" only has 24 net carbs in the (about 8oz) pack.

It's not plug for the product, just to illustrate if you do some looking you can get a decent quantity that should be friendly. I put in 2 or 3 teaspoons of "Brown Sugar Swerve" (0 net carbs) and it's almost like I'm a "sugar eater" once again 🤣

@A DiabetesTeam Member those were exceptional numbers - could up the portion size a bit for sure if you were inclined.

And you are doing exactly what you need to do - try it, test it, figure it out.

I had forgot about the Monk Fruit based Brown Sugar (Lakanto brand has some options) - and that is great as well - that (type) will caramelize if you want to make keto butter tarts - mmmmm
