A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭

Is it really possible for blood sugar to jump so high in only one hour without eating anything???

I took mine this morning at about 7 am and it was 15.7.

When i got to work at about 8:30 it was 25.

as a diabetic, you should never go long stretches without food. As Joanne C. Poirier states keep snacking with the correct foods. Pick up a copy of this book. Perfect for the average layman,,,,https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/11069457-ma...

Well for some diabetic people, including me, the longer I fast the more my body thinks I am going into starvation mode, so the liver releases it's stored sugar into the blood stream thus raising our sugar levels further, so for me fasting is not an option as it makes things worse, then I had to play catch up the rest of the day to bring the high numbers down.

Also there is something called the dawn phenomenon which happens in anyone, not only diabetics. When you get up in the morning your body produces all kinds of hormones for you to be able to function, 1 of those hormones is Cortisol (a natural steroid our body produces which is at it's highest in the morning and tapers down throughout the day), so steroids are known to increase sugar levels.

Then there is stress which can also increase our sugar levels. As a diabetic it is best to eat something before heading into work, as when our body thinks it is fasting the liver reacts to this and that we have no control over. Some people (me included at first), believe if they skip breakfast the sugar will go down, which is the opposite in diabetics. What I do is in the morning I eat a very low Carbs snack or breakfast (in my case it is Keto foods) I try and keep my morning Carbs below 10 as by noon my sugar levels have dropped some, if still high at noon I eat something low Carbs also, then by supper and bedtime snack I eat higher Carbs (something my Endo suggested). But every diabetics are different and what works for me may not work for you. But if fasting brings up your sugar, then you need to find a low Carbs meal or snack, something like nut which are high in protein and low Carbs.

This is why they do a 12 hrs fasting sugar level along with your A1C to see where your fasting sugar levels are at, in a non diabetic person the 12 hrs fasting levels will be normal (or even in very well managed diabetes you might get a normal fasting sugar level), this is how they determine your medications, if fasting levels are high then you need medications to bring them down.

Hope this helps

sometimes this happens to me when i start getting busy and start work. I think it maybe stress in my case that contributes to these fluctuations and your body release sugar when you get active. Sometimes drink water helps.
