A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭

Hi , Has anyone tried Saxenda for a appetite suppressant, to help control of food intake and lower BS?
I have been on it the max 3mg but seems not to be working again, sugars are going up again? Does anyone have any input on something else to take,, I have been doing diet and exercise

To lose weight you have to take in less calories than you burn - that's the entire secret.

While the Food Guides suggest 2000 calories a day for an adult I don't know "who" they are talking about. Most of us are nowhere near active enough to burn 2000 calories a day. Try setting a limit of 1800/day and see what that does for you, you may have to reduce more. So yes, that means reading food labels, measuring portion size etc.

I had to go all the way down to 1650 calories a day before I started seeing "significant" weight loss. I am now down 60 pounds and have kept it off for 3 years. I have slowly, with the aid of a diabetes dietician, worked my way back up to 1950 calories a day of "healthy food" and my weight is stable. And I always have been more active then most. I slug boxes in a warehouse for a living, so my activity level is high.

To lower your blood sugar "without" meds (or more meds) you have to consume less carbs then your system can metabolize. Type 2's are either insulin deficient or insulin resistant or a little of both. Many national diabetes organizations suggest 40 to 50% of your calories from carbs and perhaps 50 grams of carbs a meal. A gram of carbs is 4 calories. That would be about 250 carbs in a 2000 calorie diet, 200 in an 1800 calorie diet.

Yet every large study done to see if diet can control blood sugar found that you can not consume more than 26% of your calories in carbs if you want to lower your sugar. So that would mean your daily maximum number of carbs would be about 125 grams. For perspective a can of Coke is about 40 grams as is a cup of mashed potato. Either of those would be 1/3 of your daily "total" IF you can tollerate 125 grams of carbs.

I can't handle even 125 carbs a day. I average between 80 and 90 carbs a day and I try and limit them to no more than 25 per meal (4 meals a day to help with portion size and carb management). Any more than that and I go "out of range".

Does it work? The 60 pound weight loss combined with no more than 90 carbs a day = an A1C of 5.4 "without meds". I have no doubt without the sacrafices I make, and tracking everything that goes in my mouth I would not see those results.

Do some supplements/natural remedies help "a little"?, yes they do. But they will never replace a reduced carb/reduced calorie diet if blood sugar and weight control is your goal - there is no easy/magic pill. You have to do the hard work yourself and then you can add a supplement or two to help you the last little bit.
