Any Advice On How To Get My Fasting Number To Start Out Lower?
A DiabetesTeam Member asked a question 💭

I was diagnosed in October of 2012. I was pretty controlled; so I didn’t really have to try very hard. About a year ago this started to change. Now I find myself with fasting numbers of 170 to 200. I fight all day just to bring my numbers down. It is a losing battle. The game is rigged and there is just no winning. I am feeling very defeated and hopeless. My husband not understanding, wants to rush me to emergency all the time. I just don’t know what to do at this point.

There isn't much you can do with diet etc to effect your fasting numbers. I have tried to play with mine and have read every study I could get ahold of trying to see if there was some secret and there just isn't a way to "significantly" effect fasting numbers.

Fasting sugars are solely the result of sugar (glucagon) released by the liver while we are fasting. Some excess sugar is stored in the liver and it decides "when" to release it.

Overnight the biggest dose of sugar is released as we start to wake up and the body needs fuel to power up. Also if you go "too long" during the day the liver will release sugar to keep things fueled which is why it's important to get at least some carbs even if you are sick and cant keep solids down etc.

There is two natural ways the reduce the amount of sugar "in the liver".

First, getting at least 10mg of a "soluable, fermentable fiber" (either in food or supplement) will help "a little" (no more than 10-20 points, 0.5-1.0 in the Commonwealth system). In your case it wouldn't hurt but also wouldn't make enough of difference to gain control. There are also a number of natural remedies that have shown to reduce FBS by 5 points or so (cinnamon, bitter melon, apple cider vinegar etc), but again, not "significant".

The second method is to simply eat less carbs all the time. If you don't consume carbs that get converted to sugar the liver has little/nothing to store so less to release. The results of this will vary wildly from one person to another and may not even work all that well since free protein can also be converted to sugar if no carbs are available, it's just a more difficult process for the body.

And that is why the only "effective" way to control FBS is through (drugs). Metformin does a good job (it's primary function is to stop the liver from releasing sugar) and a Basil Insulin (long acting/not mealtime insulin), doesn't stop the sugar release but helps burn it up.

If you are on either of them and your numbers remain stubborn perhaps they need a dosage adjustment.

About a month ago things got better. I started taking a fiber pill, and 2 apple cider vinegar pills. I also started to drink protein once in a while, I was told it helps balance blood sugar. I still have days when I’m higher, but definitely not starting over 200 every day. It was frustrating because it just started out of the blue. I was doing nothing different. I do go too long without eating; so when I wake up eating should be my main priority. I also sleep grave yard hours. It does complicate things, but I wanted to update everyone that I am doing better. It was feeling very hopeless and not worth even trying for a while there. Thanks for all the advice (:

There are clinics that charge u according to income. Look into it. Also, the pharmaceutical companies may be able to give you free or reduced Rx. Take your aspirin like you are supposed to. Do what you can for yourself but do ask 4 help. We are all in this together.
